No semi-automatic rifles or shotguns are allowed in South Africa. When hunting plains game in the Kalahari shooting distances vary between 100 to 250 yards. Medium caliber rifles such as 30-06,300’s, 338, etc. with premium grade bullets are advised. Ensure you have a good quality scope fitted sighted in at 200 yards. 60-80 rounds of ammunition should see you through on an average 10 day safari. For bird hunting a 12-guage shotgun is recommended, as it is easier to supply you with more ammo should you run out. Firearms can also be hired by prior arrangement at a rate of $25 per day excluding ammunition

Two rifles and one shotgun may be imported into Botswana on a temporary basis. You are allowed up to 100 cartridges per caliber or gauge. Handguns, .22 caliber and automatic firearms are strictly forbidden. By law, dangerous game hunting must be undertaken, using a minimum 375 caliber. For bird hunting a 12-guage shotgun is recommended, as it is easier to supply you with more ammo should you run out. In order for De Klerk Safaris to apply on your behalf for the firearm import permits, they must be furnished, with all the necessary information, at least 2 months prior to your arrival.
